Single-Side Pole Lighting

Poles run along one edge of the piste, typically 20 to 30 metres apart, with fixtures angled across the slope. This is the cheapest layout and by far the most common on shorter runs. Its weakness is shadow. Skiers and terrain features throw long shadows away from the light line, and the far edge of a wide piste can sit noticeably darker than the near edge. On a run 30 metres wide this is manageable. On one twice that width it is not, and you will find yourself unconsciously skiing the lit side all evening.

Double-Side Pole Lighting

Poles on both edges, usually staggered rather than directly opposite. Shadows cast from one side are filled by light from the other, producing a much flatter and more readable surface. This is what you want on wider intermediate pistes, and its presence is a reliable sign the resort designed the lighting properly rather than bolting fixtures onto an existing run as an afterthought.

Tower Floodlighting

A smaller number of tall masts, often 18 to 25 metres high, each carrying a cluster of high-output fixtures. These are common over base areas, snow-play zones and beginner terrain, where a single tower can wash an entire open area evenly. Towers deliver excellent coverage of broad flat ground but perform poorly along a long, winding piste, where the light falls off sharply between masts.

Brightness: What the Numbers Actually Mean

Illumination is measured in lux. For context, a well-lit office runs around 500 lux and full moonlight sits below 1 lux. Piste lighting falls a long way short of an office but far above moonlight, and the practical thresholds are roughly as follows:

  • Under 10 lux. Adequate only for very gentle, wide, uniform beginner terrain. Surface detail is essentially invisible.
  • 10 to 30 lux. The range most Chinese night pistes occupy. Comfortable for cruising groomed runs at moderate speed.
  • 30 to 75 lux. Good quality. Bumps and ice patches read clearly and confident skiers can approach daytime speeds.
  • Above 75 lux. Competition or broadcast standard, rare outside dedicated event venues.

Uniformity matters at least as much as raw brightness. A run averaging 25 lux with even coverage is far better to ski than one averaging 40 lux with bright pools beneath each pole and dim gaps between them. Your eyes adapt to the bright patches and then cannot read the dark ones, which is the visual equivalent of driving in and out of tunnels. Metal Halide Versus LED

Older installations across the region use metal halide lamps. They are bright and pleasantly warm-white, but slow to reach full output and prone to gradual dimming across their service life. Newer and retrofitted systems use LED, and the advantages are real: instant start, stable output, much better beam control, and far lower power draw. Well-designed LED optics also spill much less light off the piste, which cuts glare in your peripheral vision.

There is one important caveat. Cheap LED retrofits sometimes use very cool colour temperatures above 6000K, producing a harsh blue-white light. On snow this can flatten contrast rather than improve it, and it causes noticeable eye fatigue across a two-hour session. Better installations sit in the 4000 to 5000K neutral range. Coverage: How Much Mountain Is Actually Lit

This is where marketing and reality diverge most sharply. A resort with twenty pistes may light two of them. The questions worth asking are which runs, at what difficulty, and whether the lit terrain connects into something you can lap.

Typical night coverage in Xinjiang looks like this:

  1. The beginner zone and its conveyor lifts, almost always lit, because evening beginner lessons are commercially important.
  2. One or two main groomed intermediate runs served by a single lift.
  3. The base area, rental building and access paths between them.

What is generally not lit: advanced terrain, tree runs, anything away from the main lift corridor, and long connector traverses.
