Sayram Lake in Winter: Blue Ice, Frozen Bubbles, and a Skier’s Side Trip in Xinjiang

We had skied Nalati and soaked in Wenquan’s hot springs for a week before our driver pointed north and said the real winter show was barely an hour away. That show was Sayram Lake, a high mountain lake that freezes into a sheet of cobalt blue ice every winter. For foreign skiers building a Northern Xinjiang loop, it is the easiest and most photogenic non-ski day you can add to the trip.

Sayram Lake (also spelled Sailimu Lake) sits in Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, beside Huocheng County in Ili, at about 2,071 meters above sea level. It is the highest and largest alpine lake in Xinjiang, covering 453 square kilometers, and locals call it “the last tear of the Atlantic.” For the lake’s geology and background, see Sayram Lake on Wikipedia. We treat it as a half-day to full-day excursion that pairs naturally with the ski resorts and hot springs of the Ili valley, not a detour but a logical stop on the same winter road.

Why Skiers Should Add Sayram Lake to a Xinjiang Winter Trip

Most foreign visitors come to Xinjiang for the snow, and rightly so. But a ski holiday here is really a winter travel holiday, and the lake fills a gap that powder cannot: a flat, silent, otherworldly landscape you walk on. After days of thigh-burning runs, the lake is a recovery day that still feels like an adventure. We have met skiers who planned two hours at the shore and stayed five.

The practical link is geography. Sayram Lake sits on the main road between Urumqi and Yining, close to the Ili ski fields and the Wenquan cross-country venue. You are not diverting far from your 14-day Xinjiang ski itinerary; you are simply letting the route breathe for one blue-ice morning.

Getting There: Distances and the Winter Drive

The numbers are friendly. The lake is 145 km from Yining, about a two-hour drive, and 85 km from Bole, about one hour. From Urumqi it is roughly 600 km, best done as an overnight stop rather than a day trip. The ring road around the lake is about 90 km, and we budget five to six hours to drive it slowly, stop for photos, and still catch the light.

In winter the park opens only the eastern gate to Dianjiangtai section, and the speed limit is a calm 30 km/h. You need an electronic pass, snow tires or chains are mandatory, and the official WeChat account “赛里木湖旅游” handles booking. If you would rather not self-drive, you can compare winter transport via Trip.com, and our local transport guide walks through hiring a driver and the permit steps in plain terms.

Winter Opening, Tickets, and Rules That Change Every Year

For the 2025-26 season the lake is open from October 16, 2025 to April 30, 2026, with gates from 8:00 to 19:00. You must leave the ice before sunset. Winter admission is half price at 35 yuan per person, a self-drive service fee runs about 75 yuan per person, and the ticket allows two entries within 48 hours.

Here is the part we repeat to every visitor: the policy moves. Some years, roughly November through March, admission is reported as free with only a vehicle passage fee charged. Because the rules shift annually, confirm the current ticket, the free-window dates, and the open sections on the official WeChat account before you commit a morning. We also cover wider timing in our best time to ski Xinjiang guide, which lines the lake visit up with snow conditions across the region.

Blue Ice Season: When the Lake Turns Cobalt

The blue ice golden window is January through March, when the ice is 80 to 100 cm thick and the color is at its deepest. The dramatic “ice push” (碎冰 shoved by wind into blue ice walls) shows up at the freeze in late December to early January and again at the thaw from late March to mid-April, and it is far more likely on windy days. The best light for both ice and ice push is 10:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 18:00. Delicate ice flowers form on January and February dawns, so an early start pays off.

Where to Shoot: Our Favorite Photo Spots

Moon Bay gives you ice textures, frozen pillars, a safe skating area, and ice sculptures. Kele Yongzhu (克勒涌珠) is where the methane bubbles freeze densest under the surface, though you are not allowed to walk on that bubble field. Dianjiangtai (点将台) is the high point for a full-lake panorama, sunset, and stars. Songshutou (松树头) is a short hike up for the wide shot, and the red-and-white lakeside lighthouse makes a clean silhouette against the blue. Xihai grassland rounds out the quieter frames.

Winter Activities on the Ice and Beside It

You can ride a snowmobile, try the ice drift cars, take a horse-drawn sleigh, skate in the safe zone at Moon Bay, or join ice fishing in designated areas with a local guide. Star photography is excellent on clear nights. Drones must be registered at the visitor center, and the Kele Yongzhu bubble area is off-limits to foot traffic to protect the ice. None of this replaces skiing, but it is the perfect low-effort afternoon between ski days.

Safety on the Frozen Lake

The rule we follow is simple: only walk the designated, hard, thick-ice zones, and stay away from cracks and melt edges. During the thaw period do not go on the ice at all, no matter how solid it looks near the shore. The open winter section runs from the east gate to Dianjiangtai, the limit is 30 km/h, and the wind across the open water makes it feel far colder than the thermometer says. If a ranger redirects you, that is the decision.

Staying Warm: Gear and Food on the Ice

Winter temperatures run from -25 to -5 Celsius and can hit -30 in extremes, with wind chill on the lake making it bite harder. We tape hand-warmers to the back of phones and cameras so they do not shut down, and we wear ice cleats (冰爪) on every slick surface. Food inside the park is scarce, mostly grilled fish and dapanji chicken, so we pack high-calorie snacks and a thermos of hot water. Our cold-weather survival tips cover the full layering and battery routine we use across Xinjiang winters.

Pairing Sayram Lake with Skiing and Hot Springs

The natural combo is ski, soak, then see the lake. From the lake it is about an hour north to the Wenquan cross-country ski field in Wenquan County, the only FIS-certified professional cross-country venue in Xinjiang, at about 1,550 m elevation, 5.6 km from the county seat, with 8 trails totaling 11 km. After a morning on the blue ice, an afternoon on those groomed loops and an evening in a hot spring is a clean rhythm. Our Nalati Ski Resort guide and our hot spring hotels guide show how to string these stops together without backtracking.

There is also a planned Sayram Lake International Ski Resort on the east side of the lake, with a reported first phase of 500 million yuan, 4 runs totaling 11,150 m, 3 lifts totaling 5,400 m, and a 10,000 m2 ski hall. As of this writing it is under construction, the opening date is not set, and you should verify before counting on it. We list it as a future option, not a bookable one.

Where to Sleep: Hotels, Camps, and the Early Start

Bole city hotels run a few hundred yuan and are the budget choice, but you will wake about two hours early to reach the gate at opening. Inside the park, the Dianjiangtai star camp has lake views and costs 1,000 yuan and up, though winter water pipes freeze easily. The Wenquan Xingyu holiday camp lets you soak in hot springs and often carries ski-resort ticket discounts, which makes it our pick if you are combining the lake with the cross-country field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Sayram Lake in winter without a Chinese guide?

Yes. Foreign visitors can self-drive or hire a driver and enter with the electronic pass booked through the official WeChat account. A guide is helpful for ice fishing and bubble-area context but is not required to enter or drive the open section.

Do I need special permits beyond the park pass?

You need the park’s electronic access pass and, for foreign travelers, the standard Xinjiang regional entry steps covered in our visa and permits guide. The lake itself does not require a separate border permit, but confirm at booking since rules shift with the season.

How cold does it get and what should I wear?

Expect -25 to -5 Celsius with wind chill lower on the ice. We wear ice cleats, layer for static cold while shooting, and keep hand-warmers on cameras and phones. Pack high-calorie food and a thermos, since park dining is limited in winter.

Is the Sayram Lake ski resort open to visitors now?

No. The Sayram Lake International Ski Resort is a planned, under-construction project with an unconfirmed opening date. Do not plan a ski day there yet; verify before you travel and use the existing Ili resorts and the Wenquan cross-country field instead.

How do I combine the lake with my ski trip logically?

Route it as Yining or Nalati ski days, a Wenquan hot-spring night, then a morning at Sayram Lake on the drive north or back toward Urumqi. The lake sits right on that corridor, so it costs little extra driving and breaks up the ski-heavy schedule.
