Every Xinjiang ski trip begins in the air, and the airport you choose shapes the whole logistics. Most people land in Urumqi, the regional hub, then move north to the Altay snow. A smaller number fly straight into Altay to save a transfer. Both work; the difference is time, cost, and how much winter weather you want to gamble on.
Urumqi Diwopu International
The main gateway, with the most flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and international connections via hubs. From here, Silk Road resort is a short drive, and Altay is a further flight or long train north. If you are skiing multiple regions, Urumqi is the natural entry.
Altay Xuedu Airport
Closer to the famous northern powder, with daily flights from Urumqi and some direct links. The catch is weather: snow and wind close this airport more often than Urumqi, and when it closes, you wait. I always build a buffer day when flying directly into Altay in deep winter.
Routes that make sense
Flying into Urumqi and training or driving north suits a broader trip. Flying into Altay suits a tight, powder-focused trip, provided you accept delay risk. If your dates are fixed and non-negotiable, Urumqi plus a buffer is the safer bet.
Planning around delays
Book the arrival a day before your first ski day. Keep digital and paper copies of bookings, because mountain-town signal is unreliable. Travel insurance that covers missed connections is worth it here. And avoid tight international-to-domestic connections; Chinese winter weather does not respect your schedule.

A practical tip
If you check a bag with ski gear, tag it clearly and photograph it at drop-off. Gear delayed in Urumqi is recoverable; gear delayed and untraceable is a ruined first day.
