People ask whether Xinjiang is ‘as good as’ Japan or the Alps. The honest answer is that it is different, not worse, and which is better depends on what you value. I have skied all three regions, and here is the straight comparison.
Snow
Japan’s famous powder is deep and frequent; the Alps offer varied, sometimes heavy snow and huge terrain; Xinjiang offers cold, dry, long-lasting powder with far fewer people. If your priority is untracked snow and empty lines, Xinjiang competes seriously, especially in January and February.
Cost
The Alps are expensive, Japan moderate-to-expensive in peak, and Xinjiang generally the cheapest of the three for lift access and lodging. A comparable trip costs noticeably less in Xinjiang, which is a real argument for longer stays.
Crowds
Japanese resorts can be packed in peak; famous Alps spots too. Xinjiang’s northern resorts are quiet by comparison, with many days of solitude. If you dislike lift lines, this is Xinjiang’s strongest card.
Culture and experience
