First-Timer Packing Checklist for a Xinjiang Ski Trip

The cold in Xinjiang winter is no joke, and the visitors who suffer are usually the ones who packed for a European resort and met minus twenty. A good trip starts in the suitcase. Here is the checklist I give first-timers, focused on what actually matters up north.

Clothing layers

  • Base layers: merino or synthetic, two sets, not cotton.
  • Mid layer: fleece or light down.
  • Shell: waterproof, breathable jacket and pants.
  • Insulated layer: a puffy for lifts and evenings.
  • Two pairs of ski socks; dry feet are non-negotiable.

Hands, head, face

Two pairs of gloves (one spare), a neck gaiter or balaclava, and quality goggles with a low-light lens. The wind at altitude is brutal on exposed skin, so a face mask is worth packing even if you think you will not use it. Hand warmers are cheap insurance.

Electronics

Phone with a local SIM if unlocked, a power bank (cold kills batteries), and chargers. A translation app downloaded offline. A camera with spare batteries if you shoot. Keep devices warm in an inside pocket between uses.

Documents and money

Passport and visa, printed confirmations for flights and lodging, travel insurance details, and a payment method that works locally. Our visa guide covers the paperwork.

Skin and small comforts

Lip balm, heavy moisturizer, and sunscreen; the UV off snow is strong even when cold. A small medical kit, any personal medication, and eye drops for the dry air. These small items prevent miserable days.

Gear decision

Bring your own boots if you can; rent the rest locally. The rental trade-off is in our rental vs buy guide, and flying with gear is covered in our gear-flight guide.

My non-negotiables

Spare gloves, a power bank, and a face mask. Forget those three and the trip gets harder than it should.
