Nothing on a winter trip fails as reliably as a battery. Phones shut down at what the screen claims is forty percent, action cameras give up after two runs, and the one adapter you packed turns out to fit nothing in the room. Most of this is avoidable, but only if you sort it out before you fly rather than at a base lodge in Altay. Plugs and Voltage: The Short Version
China runs on 220 volts at 50 hertz. Sockets come in three shapes, and you will meet all of them on a single trip:
- Type A — two flat parallel pins, the same shape used in North America and Japan.
- Type C — two round pins, the standard European shape.
- Type I — three flat pins in a slanted arrangement, the Australian shape. This is the official Chinese standard and the one you will find in newer buildings.
Most hotel rooms built in the last fifteen years have hybrid sockets that swallow all three without an adapter, which is why plenty of visitors never plug in a converter at all. Older guesthouses in ski towns are less generous. Bring one small universal adapter and stop worrying about it.
Voltage is where people get burned. Phone chargers, laptop bricks, camera chargers and almost every modern USB power supply are rated 100 to 240 volts, so they only need a shape adapter. Single-voltage 110-volt appliances are the exception, and hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers and some older battery chargers are the usual casualties. A plug adapter does not change voltage. Plugging a 110-volt hair dryer into a Chinese socket will destroy it, sometimes spectacularly. One genuinely useful upgrade: swap three separate chargers for a single multi-port USB-C wall charger. Ski-town guesthouses are often short on sockets, and the ones they have are rarely near the bed.
The Power Bank Rules That Catch Foreign Visitors Out
Power banks are the single most common source of airport trouble on a China ski trip, and the rules are stricter than most travellers expect.
The international baseline applies here as everywhere: lithium batteries must travel in your carry-on, never in checked baggage. Under 100 watt-hours needs no approval. Between 100 and 160 watt-hours needs airline approval and is usually capped at two units. Above 160 watt-hours is refused outright. To convert the number printed on your battery, divide milliamp-hours by 1,000 and multiply by 3.7. A typical 20,000 mAh pack is roughly 74 watt-hours, comfortably inside the limit.
The part that catches foreign visitors is specific to China. Civil aviation authorities have tightened enforcement so that power banks carried on domestic flights are expected to display a valid CCC mark (China Compulsory Certification, printed as “3C”), and units with no marking, an illegible label or a recalled batch number can be refused at security. Power banks bought outside China generally carry CE, FCC or UKCA marks rather than 3C. Rules in this area have been changing quickly, so confirm the current position with your airline before you fly rather than trusting a forum post.
The practical workaround is unglamorous and effective: keep your foreign power bank for the international leg if permitted, and buy a 3C-marked pack in Urumqi for the domestic flights and the mountain days. They are cheap, widely sold in airport shops and phone stores, and one less argument at a security desk is worth the money. Whatever you carry, make sure the capacity label is legible — a scuffed-off print is treated as an unlabelled battery. Camera, Drone and Heated-Gear Batteries
Spare camera batteries follow the same carry-on rule, and loose cells must have their terminals protected — original plastic cases, or a strip of tape over the contacts. Security staff do check this, and a bag of naked batteries rolling around a pocket is a legitimate reason to hold you up.
Drone batteries are treated the same way in the air, but the bigger constraint is on the ground. Flight restrictions apply around many Chinese scenic areas, airports and border-adjacent zones, and parts of northern Xinjiang fall into sensitive categories. Heated gloves, heated socks and heated vests use small packs well under the limits, so the air rules are a non-issue. Their real problem is that they eat a full charge in a single cold day, which is a planning question rather than a security one. Avalanche transceivers are the odd one out: most manufacturers specify alkaline cells rather than lithium or rechargeable, because the battery gauge is calibrated for alkaline discharge behaviour. Bring a sealed spare set and do not improvise.
How Much Power a Ski Day Actually Uses
Cold roughly doubles what you expect to spend. A rough per-day budget for one person:
- Phone — one and a half to two full charges if you are navigating, photographing and messaging in sub-zero air, against half a charge at home.
- Action camera — two to three batteries for a full day of intermittent recording; run time in deep cold is often half the rated figure.
- Heated gloves or socks — one full charge per day, more on the coldest settings.
- Mirrorless or DSLR — one to two batteries, more if you shoot in the blue hour.
A single 74 watt-hour power bank covers a couple of days off-grid for a phone-and-camera setup. Two smaller banks beat one large one, because you can leave one charging in the room while the other goes up the mountain.

Cold Is Not Draining Your Battery — It Is Hiding It
This is the most useful thing to understand about winter electronics, and almost nobody explains it. Lithium cells do not lose their stored charge in the cold. What happens is that internal resistance climbs, the voltage sags under load, and the device reads that sag as an empty battery and shuts down to protect itself. The energy is still in there.
Two consequences follow. First, a phone that died at what it claimed was forty percent will usually wake up at close to forty percent once it has spent ten minutes against your body — so do not waste time hunting for a charger, just warm it. Second, an inside chest pocket is the only storage that works. A jacket outer pocket, a backpack lid or a trouser pocket over a shell layer are all effectively outdoor temperature.
One hard rule worth remembering: do not charge a lithium battery that is still below freezing. Charging a cold cell causes lithium plating, which is permanent capacity damage rather than a temporary sulk. When you come off the hill, let the battery reach room temperature before plugging it in. Twenty minutes is usually enough. Chemical hand warmers work well in the same pocket as a phone, but keep a layer of fabric between them rather than pressing them directly against the case.
Charging on Trains, in Cars and at Small Guesthouses
Long-distance trains are the easiest place to top up. Modern high-speed carriages have sockets at seat level, and sleeper compartments have at least one per berth, though corridor sockets on older services get claimed early. Airport transfers and resort shuttles are the worst: in-vehicle USB ports are usually low-output and often just enough to slow the rate at which your phone is losing charge, not reverse it. Do not plan around them.
Small guesthouses in Altay and Kanas are functional but sparse — expect two sockets in the room, neither of them near the bed. Resort lockers almost never have power. In practice, the evening in your room is your only reliable charging window, so build the habit of plugging in everything the moment you walk through the door, including the spares you did not use.
