Skiing as a group in Xinjiang exposes a problem that barely registers at a European or North American resort. The runs are long, the terrain between lift stations is often out of sight, the wind is loud, and every announcement over the resort tannoy is in Chinese. Split up and you have no shared channel and no ambient information to fall back on. Most visiting groups reach for their phones, discover within an hour that phones do not work as live communication in these conditions, and spend the trip skiing in an anxious clump.

There is a better answer, but it starts with a legal point that catches almost everyone: the radios you brought from home are probably transmitting on frequencies that are not licence-free in China.

Your Radios From Home Are Probably on the Wrong Frequency

Consumer walkie-talkies are region-locked by regulation, not by hardware fashion. North American FRS radios operate around 462 and 467 MHz. European PMR446 radios operate around 446 MHz. Neither of those bands is allocated for licence-free public use in China.

China’s equivalent is a dedicated public radio service band in the 409 MHz range, restricted to low power output and a defined set of channels. Handsets sold in China for this purpose are type-approved for it. Your PMR446 pair from home is not.

In practice nobody at a ski resort will inspect your radio. This matters for function, not enforcement. Transmitting outside an allocated band means you may sit on top of another service, pick up interference you cannot explain, and are technically operating unauthorised equipment in a country where importing radio gear can require declaration. For a handful of ski days the trade is not worth it.

Three Setups That Actually Work in China

Buy a Chinese public-band pair after you land

A pair of compliant handsets is cheap, widely stocked in Urumqi electronics markets and available on domestic shopping apps for delivery to your hotel. Look for sets described as public radio service handsets on the 409 MHz band. Range is modest because power output is capped: a few hundred metres to a kilometre with line of sight, far less through a ridge. Enough to cover a single lift pod, and honest about what it cannot do.

For groups of two to four, this is the best option and the one most visitors overlook. Motorcycle-style helmet intercom units pair over Bluetooth, which sidesteps radio regulation entirely because they are not radio transmitters in the regulated sense. Range is typically a few hundred metres up to around a kilometre in clear line of sight, which covers a group spread down one run or strung out in a lift queue. Visitors assume a phone plus a messaging app equals communication. On a cold chairlift it fails in three stacked ways, and all three have to be solved simultaneously for it to work even once.

First, the gloves. Touchscreen liners help with a single tap, but the real problem is deeper. Below about minus twenty, bare or thinly covered fingers lose fine motor control within thirty seconds. Unlocking a phone, finding the right conversation and holding a voice-message button is a three-step operation, and by step three your hand no longer works. Second, the screen. Cold batteries and cold displays produce sudden shutdowns at charge levels that look perfectly healthy.   • Name meeting points by fixed objects, never by direction. “See you at the bottom” is meaningless at a resort with three base areas. “Outside the ticket window at the bottom of lift three” is a location. Photograph the meeting point on the first morning and put it in the group chat so nobody is relying on memory or on reading a Chinese sign.
  • Set fixed check-in times, not event-driven ones. Agree that the group regroups at a named point on the hour, every hour. Event-driven contact fails because the person who needs help is the one who cannot initiate it.
  • Fix the last run as a clock time, not a feeling. “One more” is how groups get separated in fading light. Agree an absolute time for the final lift and treat it as fixed.
  • Decide the missing-person procedure in advance. Who waits, how long, and what happens next. A workable default: wait fifteen minutes at the meeting point, then one person asks the ticket office to make an announcement while another checks the last known run. Do not assume patrol will go looking; they respond to reports, and the report has to come from you. On a busy weekend the licence-free band is shared with local groups, instructors and families, all of whom got there first. Pick a channel high in the range, listen before you transmit, and confirm with a short test that your group hears each other before you split up.
