The resort base village
Staying at the mountain means ski-in, ski-out convenience and first chair without a drive. You gain sleep and lose money and dining variety. The base areas are small, so after a couple of days you have seen every restaurant. Best for short powder trips where time on snow matters most, and for anyone who hates a winter commute.
Altay city
Altay city is the practical hub: airports, hospitals, better food, and the easy access to General’s Mountain. You commute to the bigger resorts, but the drive is manageable and the evening life is better. Best for first-timers, families who want options, and anyone flying in and out of Altay who wants a buffer day.
A nearby town (Burqin and others)
Towns like Burqin offer lower prices, good local food, and a calmer pace, at the cost of a longer drive to the snow. Best for budget travelers and slow travelers who want a real sense of place. Less ideal if every minute on snow counts.
How I decide for people
If it is a three-day powder dash, base village. If it is a week with mixed abilities and some non-skiers, the city. If it is a long, cheap, wander-slow trip, the town. The cold makes the commute matter more than it would in the Alps, so do not underestimate a forty-minute pre-dawn drive in minus twenty.
